How Do Corticosteroids Cause HPA-Axis Suppression?

HPA-Axis suppression refers to the slowing down of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which is a crucial system for managing stress and regulating many body processes.

Corticosteroid treatment can lead to HPA suppression because the body may stop producing its natural corticosteroids when it's receiving them from medication.

This can affect the body's ability to respond to stress and regulate metabolism, immune function, and other essential processes.

Where Can I Find Guidance On Corticosteroid Withdrawal?

You can find advice on stopping corticosteroids in the Drug Summary of Product Characteristic (SmPC). The amount and how quickly you reduce the dose should be based on each person's situation.

This includes looking at the illness being treated, as well as factors specific to the patient, like how likely it is for the symptoms to come back and how long they've been taking corticosteroids.
